Children's Book Illustration
Sandra Morris is passionate about her work and offers a wealth of knowledge and experience. Here is an opportunity for aspiring author/illustrators to build expertise and technique as they learn the skills of developing and illustrating a picture book. This hands-on, informative programme will show you how to take your picture book from concept to submission.
Learn techniques to create and develop your very own storybook characters. Suitable for those with basic drawing ability. The two day course is held on a consecutive Saturday and Sunday. The course will cover:
Storyboarding & Making a Dummy
Learn the process of illustrating, and developing a picture book. Explore ways in which relationships of image and text can enhance the story, and discover sequencing techniques to improve the pace, rhythm and flow of your book. Suitable for those with basic drawing ability.
The 2 day course will cover:
Following on you will, design, illustrate and then make a mock-up picture book of your story. Learn the principles of page design, the balance of image and text and guiding the eye across the page. Continue with character development and drawing techniques that will have your characters running and leaping from the page!
The course will cover:
Day 1: Experiment with a range of illustration techniques using graphite, pen and coloured pencils. Create a knowledge bank of skills to continue with your illustration projects. This is an opportunity to develop skills and discover new techniques to enhance your work. The course will cover:
Day 2: Following on from Day 1, we continue to experiment with illustration techniques, this time concentrating on watercolour and gouache. Using your chosen technique, illustrate a final artwork for your story. To conclude our programme, I offer advice on pitching your story to publishers. The course will cover:

Learn to make precious simple folded and stitched books with paste paper covers. These books make ideal special gifts, especially for special occasions such as graduations, births, baptisms, anniversaries

This workshop is an introduction to plant illustrations and is ideal for anyone interested in drawing and painting the botanical world.

Drawing REAL animals with Sandra Morris
Taking children through the steps of drawing live animals - from looking initially at basic shapes and then drawing the form. Working with quick gestural studies and then longer intense observation.
An introduction to the animals involved - A look at examples of animal drawings in different mediums with an emphasis on sketching.
Demonstration of gestural drawing to capture quick study. And then more intensely observed drawing starting with basic shapes and then forming the 3D body
Discussion on animal’s mood/stance etc and how to capture this - facial and body expressions. Discussions on importance of our own wildlife.
Creative hand lettering for children
This workshop will take children through the process of designing hand lettering to suit particular themes. They will experiment with different art materials to create and colour their hand lettering.

These are live-in weekend workshops with all catering and accommodation included in fee.
Wildlife Printmaking NEW DATEThe course will cover: An introduction to contemporary plant and wildlife printmaking. Speed drawing exercises and sketching birds down at the shellbanks through telescopes. Plant drawing. Participants will have the choice of printing intaglio process and/or lino relief process. Using simple methods that can be used on the kitchen table.
Keeping a Nature Journal
An introduction to the flora and fauna of the surrounding area and will include working inside and outside responding to and visually recording the surrounding ecosystem and its inhabitants. Discussions on examples of contemporary nature journallers and the use of creative hand lettering.

Watercolour and Autumn Leaves NEW WORKSHOP
Autumn is a magical time with the changing colours of Autumn leaves. Learn how to blend wet on wet watercolours into your drawings of Autumn leaves and make spectacular colourful paintings.
Learn how to make little treasure books, perfect for giving as a gift or mounting a collection of small special things, such as stamps, old photos or little drawings, Sandra will show you how to create and customise, from cover to cover.
Life Drawing NEW WORKSHOP
Sandra will run a tutored Life drawing session with a live model.
The session will start with quick 2 minute dynamic poses and extend into longer 15-20 minute poses. A range of techniques and art mediums will be explored.
Linocut Printmaking for Beginners
A simple hands on approach to this very useful printmaking method. A day of experimentation with different cutting tools and an opportunity to make a simple lino cut print - useful for card making and small gifts.

An introduction to the flora and fauna within the park. This workshop will have children reconnect with nature and will teach observational skills and how to record their responses in creative and interesting ways using words and sketches. Suitable for 8+year olds.
At what ever level we appreciate nature, the most important thing is to enjoy it in every way we can- this workshop is an introduction to the flora and fauna within the park, and will heighten your observational skills and teach you how to visually record the surrounding ecosystem and its inhabitants in diverse ways.
