Children's Book Illustration

Sandra Morris is passionate about her work and offers a wealth of knowledge and experience. Here is an opportunity for aspiring author/illustrators to build expertise and technique as they learn the skills of developing and illustrating a picture book. Character Development

Learn techniques to create and develop your very own storybook characters. Suitable for those with basic drawing ability. The two day course is held on a consecutive Saturday and Sunday. The course will cover:

  • an introduction to picture books — What makes a successful picture book?
  • character mapping
  • learn drawing techniques that bring your character to life
  • develop more dynamic character drawings through making a 3D model

Storyboarding & Making a Dummy Book

Learn the process of illustrating, and developing a picture book. Explore ways in which relationships of image and text can enhance the story, and discover sequencing techniques to improve the pace, rhythm and flow of your book. Suitable for those with basic drawing ability.

The 2 day course will cover:

  • an overview - tricks of the trade;
  • pagination, using text and image relationships to your advantage; and
  • learn sequencing techniques, to improve your story's pace, rhythm and flow.

Day Two

Following on you will, design, illustrate and then make a mock-up picture book of your story. Learn the principles of page design, the balance of image and text and guiding the eye across the page. Continue with character development and drawing techniques that will have your characters running and leaping from the page!

The course will cover:

  • techniques to make your composition more dynamic
  • the principles of page layout and design
  • bringing your characters to life

Illustration Techniques - Part 1

Experiment with a range of illustration techniques using graphite, pen and coloured pencils. Create a knowledge bank of skills to continue with your illustration projects. This is an opportunity to develop skills and discover new techniques to enhance your work.

  • graphite and other soft pencils useful for outlines
  • techniques using ink - various pens, sticks and wash techniques
  • various coloured pencil techniques

Illustration Techniques - Part 2

Following on from Illustration Techniques Part 1, we continue to experiment with illustration techniques, this time concentrating on watercolour. Using your chosen technique, illustrate a final artwork for your story. To conclude our programme, I offer advice on pitching your story to publishers.

Botanical Painting

Love plants? Have a favourite you want to sketch? This workshop is is an introduction to plant illustrations and is ideal for anyone interested in drawing and painting the botanical world. After a brief look at the history and contemporary development of botanical illustration, some basic plant anatomy will be explored. Flower structures and leaf shapes will be examined with the 'naked eye' as well as under a microscope. Exercises on observational drawing will be set, encouraging you to experiment with a range of drawing tools, such as pencils, charcoal and pastel and watercolours. You will create a variety of works from the delicate small study to a larger gestural piece.

On completion of the course learners will be able to:

  • discuss the development of botanical illustration
  • dissect and identify flower parts sketch plants with confidence using a variety of media

Private Botanical Painting Classes

Sandra also runs private monthly botanical classes. These workshops cater for students at all levels. This year we are focussing on trees and working with different techniques: tonal work with graphite, colour pencils, watercolour and pen/ ink. Classes over summer months and fine days will be outdoors. Wet days will be indoors.

Nature Journalling at Miranda

Sandra teaches a weekend workshop on nature journaling once a year at the Miranda Shorebird Centre near the Firth of Thames. Learn how to draw for identification or just for pleasure from the natural world around the Shorebird centre and local shell-banks. During this workshop we will work with specific drawing exercises to get up to speed to later venture down to the shell banks and with the use of telescopes visually record in our journals the feeding wading birds as they come in on the high tide to roost on the shell-banks. Special attention will be given to composition and the various ways of incorporating hand drawn lettering along with your studies of the flora and fauna.

Printmaking at Miranda

A weekend workshop starting on Friday night with a shared meal at the Miranda Shorebird Centre near the Firth of Thames. Learn how to draw the shorebirds and the natural world around the Shorebird centre and local shell-banks. During this workshop we will work with specific drawing exercises to get up to speed to later venture down to the shell banks and with the use of telescopes visually record the feeding wading birds as they come in on the high tide to roost on the shell-banks. Then turn your sketches into studies and make a lino cut print.

Sketching Animals at the Zoo

During this one day class you will spend some time inside learning drawing techniques with stuffed specimens to learn the processes of looking and drawing rapidly to get the essential form of a moving animal.

Some demos on materials will be included. Then you will move out into the zoo where you will start with more sedentary resting animals, then as you gain more confidence, you will move onto the more active animals.

Course fee includes zoo admittance. You will need to bring your own materials (minimum paper, pencils, eraser and sharpener). A materials list will be emailed upon registration.

Who should attend? Artists looking to extend into a new field, beginners, animal lovers, zoo keepers, teachers, zoology students with an interest in animal behaviour.
