Biography Suzanne Simpson

Suzanne was born in Africa. She always loved drawing from an early age and couldn’t wait to escape high school to go to art college.

She studied Fine Art at The Foundation School of Art, where she developed a keen interest in Illustration making this her major. Whilst still studying she won two illustration competitions for children’s readers which were published by The READ Foundation and Juta Press.

With two published books under her belt, she left Art College to start her career and under her maiden name (Suzanne Pearce) illustrated numerous educational readers for publishing companies such as Cambridge University Press, Maskew Miller Longman, Macmillan, JUTA Press and The READ Foundation in South Africa.

After moving to New Zealand, her focus changed for a few years concentrating on family and her oil paintings. Inspired by the amazing landscapes, creatures and her boys, she has reignited her passion for illustration.

She has been lucky enough to be involved in a recent digital illustration project where the book she illustrated and artwork platform she created will also be turned into an mobile reading app for children.

In New Zealand, she has created artwork for the following publishing houses in New Zealand:

  • Gilt Edge Publishers
  • GlobalEd
  • Weldon Owen Publishing (Scholastic)
