Artist Biography

I have drawn and painted since a young age (recently of course), and I know it does age me, but, in the days before and even after black and white television, as an only child I just had my books and wild imagination for company.  Reading was a powerful escape into fantasy-land, and for a long time, fed my dream to have a horse. The very fine illustrations in those early books kept me absolutely captivated, and as I grew up, kept me occupied for hours and hours as I tried to reproduce the artwork.

By the time I reached adulthood – and some of my friends would contradict that term – I was creating art in some way every day. I firmly believe that great illustration encourages and naturally supports literacy. In my illustration career I have worked most often in coloured pencil over watercolour, also soft pastel

When painting children and adults I generally use real models. I would love to illustrate in oil on canvas one day! With a long deadline.

I’ve illustrated around 22 educational books, 18 stories/article/poems, and 6 novel covers to date, plus designed and illustrated 2 editions of postage stamps and First Day Covers for NZ Post (Favourite Felines’ and ‘The Year of the Rabbit’ for the Kingdom of Tonga). For many years I worked as a children’s book designer for Lands End Publishing and Learning Media for the
international market.

I continue to work as an artist from my studio in Wanganui, and teach art workshops regularly to both adults and children. Many of my NZ farming paintings are reproduced and distributed nationally and internationally. I am currently researching and designing a range of thirty-two stained glass windows illustrating the history of Wanganui, which grace the Wanganui District Council chambers one by one as they are complete. My other role in this project is to paint the detail of each window directly onto the glass before construction. I have won a number of art awards in recent years.

I am married to my best friend and creative handyman Jasio Zyzalo, who makes all my art furniture.
